Sunday

A colourful and noisy encounter with Família Stronger, a LGBTQIA+ collective in the neighbourhood of São Paulo’s periphery. Across a split screen, "Sunday" portrays a single day in which the collective gather for a lively lunch get-together, then head out into the streets for a protest against the conservative forces behind the 2016 coup d'état. The camera moves freely amongst the boisterous group, capturing spirited banter amongst this alternative queer family, and the force of their political will against a state that seeks to repress their voice.

"Sunday" is part of a documentary project of transmedia storytelling about Família Stronger which combines multiple platforms and formats, including: a webdoc with digital interactice diagrams updated in real time by a social network created for the collective, videoportraits and series of photographs.

Director Statement

In recent years, Brazil has suffered a crisis that is economic, political and related to the values that guide individual and collective conduct. The consolidation of social and human rights had, as its counterpart, the growth of conservative responses that try to condemn experiences and practices that diverge from the standards set by rich, white and heterosexual groups.

As we can see in other parts of the world, the notion of "traditional family" became the center of gravity out of which a series of claims are made, seeking to transform other forms of inhabiting the world in abject experiences to be avoid and repressed.

In spite of this, there are groups that represent a vivid and powerful form of resistance. Bodies which are continuously exposed to daily violence, such as those of women, LGBTQIA+ and black people which, until recently, were not considered appropriated to occupy the public space with their particular requests and ways of behaving.
