Jacob Matthew Baldy is a young filmmaker based in Durham, New Hampshire. Currently enrolled as a full-time film major at Montclair State University in New Jersey, Baldy seeks to expand his ever-growing body of work as both a writer and director. He has previously worked on two well-received entries into The New York Shakespeare Exchange’s U.S. "Sonnet Project", editing an entry in 2018 ("Sonnet #78") and directing his own in summer of 2019 ("Sonnet #29"). In December 2019, Baldy released a full-fledged, original narrative entitled "A Dance at the End of My World", which has garnered exceptional praise from audiences alike. The film currently competes in the semi-finalist category at the 2020 Couch Film Festival where Baldy is nominated for Best Writer for the film. Today, Baldy further aspires to present original narrative tales on-screen, and continues to build upon his knowledge and passion for filmmaking with each passing day.
“A Dance at the End of My World” is a deeply personal tale based upon several of my own experiences in battling severe depression and anxiety in 2017. Told through a surreal, fictional narrative, I used the film as an outlet to express the emotions I felt, and the experiences I underwent during that point in my life. For me, I created this film as a form of catharsis. Catharsis to grant myself the ability to let go of this dark and troubled time of my past, and to use the experiences in an artistic way to teach myself that you can still find bright optimism, even in the dourest times.
This film would have been nothing without my incredibly talented cast and crew, who truly gave it their all in pouring their love and passion into this profoundly intimate tale of mine. Their hard work to me will never go unnoticed, and I am thankful to have worked with each and every single one of them, and all who have helped bring this film to life. I am honored to call them my friends.
I hope that to you as the viewer, “A Dance at the End of My World” holds as profound of an impact on you as it does on me. I hope you enjoy the film, and I hope it can help bring light into anybody’s struggles with their own, or loved one’s mental health.
