Director Statement

I am writing to you to express my deep intention and motivation behind the creation of this film, whose title is “Astillas” (Splinters).

The story follows Juan, a man who has worked tirelessly all his life. One day, he realizes that his efforts are not enough to survive. Tired of bad news and of being a slave to a corrupt system, he decides to embark on a journey in search of his happiness. Through the metaphor of the carpenter, the film reflects how Venezuela's productive system had to shut down while facing the government's propaganda machine, which lies to the people while the Venezuelan's life agonizes.

My intention with this film is to show, in a poetic and metaphorical way, the daily struggle of the common Venezuelan. Juan represents all those who, despite adversity, seek a better and more dignified life. The figure of the carpenter not only symbolizes hard work and dedication, but also the creation and hope for a better future.

The visual narrative of the film will focus on strong contrasts: the harshness of daily life versus the beauty of Juan's dreams and aspirations. We will use a monochromatic palette that reflects the duality of hope and despair, and a soundtrack that emotionally accompanies the protagonist's journey.

I hope this letter has conveyed the passion and commitment I have for this project. I am convinced that “Astillas” will not only resonate with Venezuelan audiences, but also with international audiences who may see their own struggles and hopes reflected in Juan's story.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Sincerely yours,

Idan Hernandez
