What is the true appeal of social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook? Why do we feel the need to share our lives with strangers?
In the 21st Century, it would now appear we occupy two realities- the real world and the digital. In the digital world popularity is king; how many followers, how many likes, how many subscribers, and the constant pressure put upon young people to edit their lives into moments of constant fun and excitement. But to what lengths would someone go to keep their popularity? Many have turned to what we would have called Porn, but in the online community is more commonly referred to as “camming”.

This short film is about what happens when the physical and digital realities, and the personas we develop in isolation between the two, collide.

That is the case for Erica, an introverted 22 year old who desires to be popular and adored, so much so, she has a curated a large following online as she sells sexual acts live on webcam. In the real world, she is void of control and struggles to understand the opposite sex; in the online world, she is a sexy seductress who controls hundreds of men. She desperately wants control, especially to control how the world sees her, but in her pursuit of this, discovers the dark consequences of what you wish for, or worse, what you share to strangers. Is this the true appeal of social media, to be adored?
This is not a film about pornography, it is a film about the implications of being online, drawing strong parallels between our audience’s social media usage and that of a camgirl. It is an immensely current film and one which I hope to cause much discussion and debate. Thank you.
