Director Statement

It’s interesting when someone asks, “What kind of films do you want to make?” Because I always give a convoluted answer saying, lighthearted dramedys with elements of fantasy that make the audience smile and leave them with something meaningful to think about. In support I give examples of films like Little Miss Sunshine, ET, Amelie, Forrest Gump, Cinema Paradiso, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, etc. One may say that none of these films fit the exact description of my answer. Agreed, but there are elements in each of these films that inspire me and are what I seek in a movie I want to make.

The film draws inspiration from the ancient Indian dramatic theory of – ‘Natyashastra’. The Natyashastra speaks of – ‘Navarasa’ (aka - the nine emotions). The word ‘rasa’ means essence and “denotes an essential mental state and is the dominant emotional theme of a work of art or the primary feeling that is evoked in the person that views, reads or hears such a work." It is said that the Navarasa are the basis of all human emotion, that a complete and wholesome story is one that evokes them all. It’s going to be my challenge to take the audience through these emotions in a span of ten minutes!

California Dreaming is a modern day fairy-tale about a bizarre ‘What if…’ situation. An experience that surprises and thrills the audience while being heartwarming.
