Hide this belly that I dare not see
Being an artist, a woman, an actress, and… pregnant, is it good or bad news? To answer this question, the actress Karyne Lemieux meets Joanie, a young actress, whom she follows during her pregnancy to see the impact that maternity has on her career. This inside view of Quebec’s artistic world lets us witness the vertiginous and precarious reality of the actresses and artists whom we meet during the movie. This is a starting point to broach the sensitive topic of the place that women and motherhood have in the world today.

Karyne Lemieux has been an actress for 20 years and works in cinema, theater and television. She is now using her considerable experience as an actress and a creator to direct her first movie documentary. She is the co-founder of Lauretta Productions.
I have worked as a professional actress since I left theatre school 20 years ago. When I chose to have my first child, I did not suspect the amplitude of the impact that such a decision would have on my career. Indeed, simply announcing my pregnancy made me lose contracts. I lost a role in the second season of the TV show even though it had been successful during the first season. Similarly, during the negotiations for a contract in youth’s series, I learned that I was pregnant with my second child. As soon as I told the production, I immediately lost the role. Many years later, a journalist takes an interest in artists’ experience of maternity and asks me to talk about what I went through. The article published in the journal tells the vertiginous story of many other artists who denounce the “law of silence” which pushed many women to hide their pregnancy from their entourage out of fear of being excluded from their professional world. As I thought more about the question, it dawns on me that it is objectionable, unacceptable even, that situation as a woman is so professionally disadvantageous to them. This leads me to question myself about the place that motherhood has in society and create my first documentary film.
