Renos Gavris is a filmmaker and media artist. His work combines both narrative and experimental audiovisual projects. He concentrates mainly on writing, directing and editing for film, but also utilizes other disciplines including cinematography, sound design and photography. His sound design work has been used in independent commercials in the UK and his photographs have been submitted in international competitions as well as published in Emerson College's International Student's magazine, 'The Emerson Globe'. Having previous training at the ANT1 television network in Cyprus, he has worked in a number of film sets, both in the UK and the US.
In June 2014, Renos finished shooting his first major production, the short film 'Austerity', in Athens, Greece. The story deals with the sociopolitical issue of the financial crisis in Europe on a personal level, and is inspired from real events. To cover the costs of the production, Renos has successfully completed a crowd-funding campaign through Indiegogo. The post-production of ‘Austerity’ was completed in April 2015, and the film has already been awarded at the academic film festival of Emerson College with the audience award, as well as the Take Action Hollywood award for Social Justice. The film is currently being submitted in various festivals around the world. The film has been officially selected by a number of international festivals thus far, and is scheduled to screen at the upcoming Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, the Raindance Film Festival in London, the Edmonton International Film Festival in Canada, the Athens International Film Festival, and the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus, among others.
Renos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1986. He has previous studies in Computer Science at the University of Piraeus in Greece and received his BA in Media Arts from Royal Holloway, University of London, in 2012. He is the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship award for postgraduate studies in the USA, as well as a Dean’s Fellowship from Emerson College in Boston, where he recently graduated with an MFA degree in Media Art (May 2015). At the end of his studies, Renos also received the Emerson College Graduate Program Award for outstanding academic and artistic achievement.
I believe people are often able to empathize with other people more easily in films rather than real life. Watching a movie is arguably a type of ritual where a person gives undivided attention to another person on the screen; that kind of attention is rare in reality. As a filmmaker, I set two goals for my narrative productions: to create feelings of empathy and humanity in the viewers, while at the same time shed some light on social and personal issues. Through "Austerity" I intent to do just that.
The film deals not only with the general subject of the economic crisis that exists in different countries of Europe at the moment, but above all with how that problem affects the individual. Through this fictional story inspired by real events, I aim to raise awareness on the personal dramas of the everyday people and their trials within these financially difficult times. Hopefully the audience will empathize and understand the hardships caused by the depression and enforced regulations such as the austerity measures, which are completely out of the common citizen's control.
