Director Biography - Nicholas Escobar

Writer/Director/Editor Nicholas Escobar has always been fascinated with stories; captivated by tales of wonder, fear, and triumph. At a young age, his father exposed him to Spielberg, Lucas, and Scorsese. Inspired, Nick immersed himself in the camera and began to explore the world through the perspective of a lens.

As Nick grew up, he began to observe and question. His parents, two immigrants traveling to America with hopes of success and happiness, became an undercurrent in his own dreams. Frequently relocating, Nick started to understand the hardships of labor, the complexity of human awareness, and the simplicity of happiness. It started with a want to make people smile and laugh, even if that meant embarrassing himself on camera. This then translated to capturing his own feelings on camera through characters and their motives.

High school was a peculiar, but adventurous time for Nick. Emotions were not fully distilled, but his experiences would soon prompt ideas for his work. Under a mentor, Eric Gersh, Nick would learn the technical and visual aspects of film. By the end of his senior year Nick, together with his best friend and colleague, shot a documentary that would premiere and win festivals across the nation.

Now, starting his senior year at Loyola Marymount University, Nick has been blessed to learn and collaborate with some of the most influential people and cultivate as a filmmaker. Nicholas Escobar looks forward to what the future brings, but is focused on the present. He hopes to create stories that can captivate, entertain, and connect with the audience.

As a part of LMU's School of Film and Television undergraduate program, the student filmmakers are required to write and direct a short thesis film. Students envision their story, collaborate, and produce a film that is under 10 minutes with no non-sync sound; the idea to challenge the student and his or hers ability to visualize a narrative.

"At Odds" was born through the feelings and experiences I've encountered. I wanted to see the characters struggle and triumph within a universe convoluted with chance, choice, and consequence.

Production was very challenging, but very rewarding. My best friends, whom I trust with my life and soul, acted as a 7 person skeleton crew, each taking the key principle positions. The time on set was incredible and insightful, as we all learned a little something. I believe that essence translated through the film.

Post-Production was difficult. Many key scenes were cut due to uncontrolled circumstances. Shifting the narrative around and the sequences proved to be very difficult. A first cut started at 17 minutes and over the course of a month, it was trimmed down to 7 minutes.

I cannot be more proud of the film and the hard work that was put into it. It will always serve as a reminder of my first real piece of directing and collaborating with some of the most talented people I trust .
