Rowan Marshall is an emerging filmmaker from Perth (Noongar: Boorloo), Western Australia.
Passionate about film and visual arts, he self-taught to write, produce, direct, and edit his first short film "@LIVELAUGHLACHY" in late 2024.
Rowan's interests are in the nexus between identity, relationships, technology, addiction, connection and isolation, and our shared physical and online spaces. He is keen to continue to explore these themes in new projects in 2025 and beyond.
Outside of film, Rowan is passionate about making and creating in many different ways. He is a member of the Art Gallery of Western Australia's donor group for young professionals and arts enthusiasts. He also helps run Western Sky Projects, a not-for-profit musical theatre company bringing Australian-made and lesser known works to Western Australian audiences.
Rowan works as a Technology and Change Management consultant.
@LIVELAUGHLACHY is my first film.
At its core, the short film explores the multiple personalities we all have in online and social media environments. To keep up the thin veneer of popularity, attention, and engagement, we are constantly editing the versions of ourselves that don't portray the ideal of the perfect online-self.
@LIVELAUGHLACHY shows us how far someone will go to get the life he sees online and wants for himself—even when that someone else is him.
@LIVELAUGHLACHY was shot entirely on smartphone, and having self-trained to write, produce, direct, and edit my first short, I am looking forward to expanding my technical capability, and taking on larger projects next. I am excited to learn from, and contribute to, the film industry in Perth, in Australia, and the broader filmmaking community.
