But when the unconventional film swept the 97th Academy Awards, it was a shared victory for an entire generation of innovative filmmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, several such luminaries share their wisdom, explaining that making a transformative film is a matter of laying the groundwork, connecting with actors, engaging in the endless pursuit of truth, and allowing yourself to be driven by pure grit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Master the art of preparation.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Ross was right\u2014little accidents can, indeed, be happy; but to be cinematically successful, these moments of spontaneous discovery must stem from a foundation of thorough preparation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/nickel-boys-director-ramell-ross-interview-77962\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">RaMell Ross<\/mark><\/a>, the visionary behind the 2024 reform-school drama \u201cNickel Boys,\u201d preparation begins with full immersion in one\u2019s subject. Knowing that he wanted to shoot the movie primarily using first-person point of view, Ross studied theories of perception, particularly Charles Horton Cooley\u2019s \u201clooking-glass self.\u201d This engendered a deep understanding of how \u201cyou come to know yourself through the way that people look at you,\u201d which then \u201cbecomes your reality,\u201d he explains. \u201cNickel Boys\u201d received two Oscar nods, in no small part due to its insightful depiction of the juxtaposition between seeing and being seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe Live in Time\u201d director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/we-live-in-time-director-interview-john-crowley-77848\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">John Crowley<\/mark><\/a> also believes in putting in the work ahead of, well, time. Before filming a pivotal birth sequence in his 2024 romantic drama, he enlisted professional midwife Penny Taylor to guide star Florence Pugh on the birthing process. Production also brought in a real-life newborn for Pugh and her costar Andrew Garfield to hold at the end of the scene. \u201cThis little baby shifted the central gravity of the scene and took it to a whole other level of reality,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, rehearse\u2014but don\u2019t overdo it. \u201cIn order to lean into the spontaneous stuff that happens in the magic of filmmaking, you need to have done all the work beforehand,\u201d notes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/fair-play-movie-director-interview-chloe-domont-76564\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Chloe Domont<\/mark><\/a>, the writer-director of 2023\u2019s psychological thriller \u201cFair Play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/megan-park-my-old-ass-interview-77708\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Megan Park<\/mark><\/a>, who created the 2024 coming-of-age comedy \u201cMy Old Ass,\u201d shares, \u201cThe rehearsal process is usually when I make a lot of the changes; talking about the scenes is when you discover stuff.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collaboration is key.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Filmmaking is fundamentally synergistic, so it\u2019s vital that directors create safe spaces in which actors feel free to take creative risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy goal on any project is to learn an actor\u2019s language versus imposition,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/there-is-no-tomorrow-and-there-is-no-yesterday-victoria-mahoneys-advice-for-filmmakers\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Victoria Mahoney<\/mark><\/a>, director of the 2025 fantasy-action flick \u201cThe Old Guard 2.\u201d \u201cUltimately, my job is to make [them] feel safe in order to give their optimal creative self.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Park leverages her background as a working actor to connect with performers on their level. \u201cThe most valuable tool I have as a director is how comfortable I am around actors\u2014figuring out quickly what they need or don\u2019t need from me,\u201d she explains. \u201cI can relate to little things like that more than directors who haven\u2019t been on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach extends to the entire crew. \u201cI want my sets to feel relaxed; that creates the most collaborative experience,\u201d Park says. \u201cFilmmaking is a team sport\u2014and if you go into it with that intention, you\u2019re already 10 steps ahead of most directors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strive for authenticity.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your film should tell a story that only <em>you<\/em> can tell. Consider why you want to make your film: Do you resonate with its characters? Does it provide a unique perspective or excavate a hidden truth? If you can answer a resounding yes\u2014\u201cif your film is authentic and true to who you are, it\u2019s going to be better than most of the stuff out there,\u201d according to Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/jesse-eisenberg-a-real-pain-interview-78229\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Jesse Eisenberg<\/mark><\/a>, who created and starred in the 2024 comedy-drama \u201cA Real Pain,\u201d this realness comes from a deep sense of connection with characters. \u201cWhen I\u2019m writing a script, I am every single character,\u201d he says, \u201cbecause my background is as an actor, where you\u2019re trained to try to understand your character even if they\u2019re the villain.\u201d Eisenberg\u2019s radical empathy with his characters paid off: The film garnered a supporting actor Oscar win for costar Kieran Culkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnora\u201d writer-director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/sean-baker-anora-director-interview-77703\/\">Baker<\/a> also strives to see the world from his characters\u2019 perspectives, rather than imposing external judgment. \u201cWe wanted to, perhaps, see the world through the eyes of the people who live there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To check a story\u2019s emotional truth, Domont uses a brutal but effective test, asking, \u201cDoes anyone give a flying fuck?\u201d While \u201ctelling the story you can\u2019t not tell\u201d is important, she feels it should also \u201cchallenge the world we live in on some level\u201d to really make an impact. \u201cThere is so much stuff out there these days. We are oversaturated,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s enough to just make a good movie anymore. A film has to say something about the state of the world that hasn\u2019t been explored.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be persistent.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most crucial advice from these directors is also the simplest: Don\u2019t give up! The key is perseverance combined with self-awareness.
