Maybe you have family connections, found a network of fellow creatives at film school, or won the lottery with a major contest placement. But for many unrepped screen scribes, the first place to start is with a little thing called the cold query.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a cold query?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A cold query is an unsolicited email (snail mail back in the day) to a manager, agent, or producer about your finished screenplay. You are asking these people to read your script, <em>not<\/em> sending the script itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few reasons why the query doesn\u2019t come with the work attached. First, the majority of agencies and production companies do not accept unsolicited material. A rep or producer is opening themselves up to possible legal headaches in the future if they read a script they didn\u2019t explicitly ask for (usually with the assist of a lawyer-approved release form). Attaching a script to your query letter will get it sent to the trash sight unseen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/how-to-find-director-for-script\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Know if a Director Is Right for Your Script<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, production companies and agencies receive <em>hundreds<\/em> of scripts a day from all across town. They simply don\u2019t have time to read everything, nor do they want to. As harsh as it sounds, the last thing they want is a script in their inbox from someone they\u2019ve never heard of.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of query letters as the drinks before the first date\u2014it\u2019s all part of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to write a great cold query\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research, research, research:<\/strong> Your best chance at getting the rare \u201cSure, send it over\u201d response is to be as targeted as possible. If you wrote a rom-com, there\u2019s little sense in querying a producer who specializes in horror or a manager with clients who mostly write crime thrillers. Make a massive list of recent projects that feel similar to your script. If you\u2019re querying producers, note who got it made; if you want to get repped, mark down who manages the writers. Do not open the email with \u201cYo, yo! Buddy, do I have a script for you!\u201d This rep or producer is not your buddy (at least, not yet).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it also shouldn\u2019t feel like you blasted the same exact message to a hundred people. Avoid generic greetings like \u201cTo whom it may concern\u201d and include a brief, personal touch. For example: \u201cI see that your client [NAME] is a staff writer on \u2018Stranger Things.\u2019 My supernatural pilot is a great sample for that show, or anything similar.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nail the logline:<\/strong> Condensing your entire screenplay into one or two sentences can be extremely difficult. (We\u2019ve got you covered on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/what-is-a-logline-1630\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">how to write a killer one here<\/mark><\/a>.) Still, we can\u2019t stress enough that a great logline is the core of a query letter. You can\u2019t send one until you have this perfected. Remember when we mentioned how busy reps and producers are? If they open your email at all, many are going straight for the logline. So, it needs to be instantly catchy, exciting, and memorable. Consider these three loglines. What about them makes you want to know more?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After a simple jewelry heist goes terribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant. (\u201cReservoir Dogs\u201d)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 17-year-old high school student is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, a maverick scientist. (\u201cBack to the Future\u201d)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An insurance salesman begins to suspect that his whole life is actually some sort of reality TV show. (\u201cThe Truman Show\u201d)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mention accolades: <\/strong>Briefly list anything that gives your script legitimacy. This includes finalist placement or wins at notable contests\u2014e.g., the Academy\u2019s Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, Austin Film Festival\u2019s Script Competition, or the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards\u2014or an option agreement with a producer this rep would recognize. Be <em>very<\/em> selective about this to avoid looking amateurish. Unfortunately, a Hollywood player probably isn\u2019t going to care if your screenplay was a quarterfinalist in a monthly online film festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Include comps:<\/strong> A standard part of any quick pitch is \u201cThis movie is X meets Y.\u201d Bonus points if X and Y aren\u2019t exactly the same\u2014the reader might just want to see how the heck you pulled that off. For example: Did you write a sci-fi heist film? That\u2019s \u201cStar Wars\u201d meets \u201cOcean\u2019s Eleven.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just remember to choose films or TV shows that are critically and\/or financially successful. You don\u2019t want anyone, especially producers, to immediately associate your work with something that bombed at the box office.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep it short and sweet:<\/strong> All the major information of your query letter should ideally be scannable in 30 seconds or less. You can certainly throw in a sentence or two about yourself, especially if your personal background informs the script. (\u201cThis action-thriller is based on my experiences as a Navy SEAL.\u201d) But don\u2019t give them your life story. Get to the logline as quickly as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end, thank them for their consideration, proofread (several times), and hit send.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Query one script at a time:<\/strong> Whatever you do, do <em>not<\/em> pitch multiple projects. You only have one shot to impress. Focus on what you think is your best work. Once you (hopefully) get to a general meeting, then you can mention anything else you\u2019ve completed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rinse and repeat:<\/strong> Move on to the next query\u2026and the next\u2026and the next. The honest truth is that it\u2019s highly unlikely to hear back from a cold query\u2014what\u2019s known as a silent pass. That\u2019s just the business. But you are being proactive, and playing the numbers game can produce a win every now and then, even if it\u2019s just getting your work out there!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Query letter template\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a cold query letter using Christiane Gudegast\u2019s 2018 film \u201cDen of Thieves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi [First name],<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My script \u201c<strong>Den of Thieves<\/strong>\u201d is a gritty, action-packed crime-thriller in the same vein as [producer\u2019s recent project]. Here\u2019s the logline:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>An elite unit of the L.A. County Sheriff\u2019s Department and the state\u2019s most successful bank robbery crew clash as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s \u201cHeat\u201d meets \u201cThe Town.\u201d Can I send you a copy?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you so much for your time.
