Several <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/best-indie-films-2024\/\">great indies<\/a> came from different corners of the world, and a number of genuinely inventive American works (like RaMell Ross\u2019 first-person period drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/nickel-boys-director-ramell-ross-interview-77962\/\">Nickel Boys<\/a>\u201d) pushed the filmmaking envelope. This year looks to be just as rewarding, with a number of highly anticipated projects\u2014both major blockbusters and potentially under-the-radar gems. But what are the overarching trends that might carry over into 2025?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A transgender new-wave<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Critic Willow Catelyn Maclay already<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24132301\/trans-movies-2024-i-saw-tv-glow-peoples-joker-t-blockers-essay\"> credited<\/a> 2024 for ushering in \u201ca new era of trans-authored cinema.\u201d The year saw stories that expanded the possibilities of cinema as it pertains to gender expression, including Jane Schoenbrun\u2019s abstract horror-drama \u201c<strong>I Saw the TV Glow<\/strong>,\u201d Vera Drew\u2019s lo-fi superhero parody \u201c<strong>The People\u2019s Joker<\/strong>,\u201d Theda Hammel\u2019s COVID lockdown comedy \u201c<strong>Stress Positions<\/strong>,\u201d and 20-year-old Australian director Alice Maio Mackay\u2019s punk-rock splatter-fest \u201c<strong>T Blockers<\/strong>.\u201d And these weren\u2019t the only films from transgender filmmakers in 2024\u2014Yance Ford made the searing police brutality docu-essay \u201c<strong>Power<\/strong>,\u201d while Sydney Freeland returned with her first feature in a decade, the Native American high school basketball drama \u201c<strong>Rez Ball<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even outside of transgender filmmakers drawing on their experience and point of view, trans stories made waves. Just consider the Oscar-winning musical about a trans cartel leader, \u201c<strong>Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/strong>\u201d; the road-trip documentary \u201c<strong>Will & Harper<\/strong>,\u201d about Will Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele, who has come out as a trans woman; Dev Patel\u2019s gritty action saga \u201c<strong>Monkey Man<\/strong>,\u201d which featured a tribe of transgender heroines; and the zany horror pastiche \u201c<strong>Cuckoo<\/strong>,\u201d starring trans performer Hunter Schafer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"430\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Emilia P\u00e9rez. But other areas of the industry seem keen on pushing for greater inclusion. The Sundance Film Festival played host to multiple trans stories, including the documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/67531a0c68b8b7fecefe2aa4\"><strong>GEN_<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d about reconciling in-vitro pregnancy and reproductive rights with diverse gender expressions; Australian drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/67531ffe707ccdb18d0888c3\"><strong>Jimpa<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d which follows a nonbinary teenager; Sam Heder\u2019s documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/675328a7707ccdaea108977a\"><strong>Heightened Scrutiny<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d about anti-trans legislation; and Zackary Drucker\u2019s celebrity doc \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/67532cf0707ccd336d089fd3\"><strong>Enigma<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d Other film fests are also spotlighting the trans experience: Berlin with transgender doc-cum-mermaid-fantasy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/reviews\/sirens-call-review-1236308069\/\"><strong>Sirens Call<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d Rotterdam with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/transgender-midnight-in-bali-rotterdam-trailer-1236270654\/\"><strong>Midnight in Bali<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d a narrative drama hailing from Indonesia, and Palm Springs with the coming-of-age drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/zeenat-aman-shabana-azmi-abhay-deol-bun-tikki-palm-springs-1236224586\/\"><strong>Bun Tikki<\/strong><\/a>\u201d from debuting nonbinary Indian filmmaker Faraz Arif Ansar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, 2025 is shaping up to be an embarrassment of riches when it comes to trans filmmakers. Schoenbrun and Mackay both have follow-ups in the works (slasher movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/jane-schoenbrun-reveals-funny-and-grisly-next-film-teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma\/\"><strong>Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma<\/strong><\/a>\u201d and the supernatural demon horror \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fangoria.com\/alice-maio-mackay-the-serpents-skin\/\"><strong>The Serpent\u2019s Skin<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d respectively). Isabel Sandoval has the Manilla-set heist film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/03\/arjo-atayde-philippines-lingua-franca-isabel-sandoval-moonglow-1235856953\/\"><strong>Moonglow<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d M.J. Bassett has the action-fantasy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joblo.com\/red-sonja-set-pic\/\"><strong>Red Sonja<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d Selene Kapsaski has queer sci-fi pastiche \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt13487430\/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaahPkVzxLjn4M4S9i3d1dhFNDILv_aoTYh58iCkcEneEbYdJ7FgPU-QATs_aem_QPPZyAOv1fN1ge7nz_ocmA\"><strong>The Moon Is a Hologram<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for films featuring trans and nonbinary characters\/performers, the drag queen zombie horror \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bloody-disgusting.com\/movie\/3837171\/queens-of-the-dead-first-image-from-tina-romeros-zombie-movie\/\"><strong>Queens of the Dead<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d directed by Tina Romero (daughter of legendary zombie movie filmmaker George Romero) premieres later this year, and stars \u201cI Saw the TV Glow\u201d lead Jack Haven. There\u2019s also Bill Condon\u2019s \u201c<strong>Kiss of the Spider Woman<\/strong>,\u201d a Broadway adaptation starring gender queer actor Tonatiuh, as well as British legal drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/emma-thompson-anna-friel-christopher-eccleston-hear-me-roar-1236270673\/\"><strong>Hear Me Roar<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d Danish drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt32605679\/\"><strong>Sauna<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d South African biopic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/global\/transgender-film-granny-lee-south-africa-1236176652\/\"><strong>Granny Lee<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d British trans model doc \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/global\/olivia-cappuccini-munroe-bergdorf-love-rage-documentary-1236184668\/\"><strong>Love & Rage<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d and likely more that haven\u2019t been announced yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, this new wave of trans movies will be worth keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Old masters, bold swings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two opinions on filmmaking in old age: 61-year-old Quentin Tarantino, for example, has maintained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/quentin-tarantino-hell-retire-i-390963\/\">since 2012<\/a> that he doesn\u2019t want to become \u201can old-man filmmaker\u201d doing the worst work of his career, and hopes to retire after his next film. On the other hand, 82-year-old <strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong> has expressed new artistic discovery in his twilight years. \u201cThe whole world has opened up to me,\u201d he said in<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/10\/martin-scorsese-interview-killers-of-the-flower-moon-leonardo-dicaprio-robert-de-niro-1235359006\/\"> a 2022 interview<\/a>, echoing sentiments from Japanese legend Akira Kurosawa. No matter where one falls on this issue, the current state of cinema proves that older, wiser filmmakers are still tackling audacious projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 87-year-old <strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong> recently released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/entertainment\/gladiator-2-review\">Gladiator II<\/a>,\u201d a film<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/gladiator-2-cinematographer-interview-77956\/\"> brimming with youthful political rage<\/a>. At 85, \u201cThe Godfather\u201d director <strong>Francis Ford Coppola<\/strong> finally premiered his self-financed mega-project, the mind-bending \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/megalopolis-review-francis-ford-coppola-adam-driver\">Megalopolis<\/a>.\u201d A pair of aging auteurs confronted death head-on using personal avatars: 78-year-old <strong>Paul Schrader<\/strong> with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/oh-canada-paul-schrader\">Oh, Canada<\/a>,\u201d about a terminally ill filmmaker, and 81-year-old <strong>David Cronenberg<\/strong> with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-shrouds-review-david-cronenberg\">The Shrouds<\/a>,\u201d about a grieving tech CEO. And at 94, <strong>Clint Eastwood<\/strong> released the thrilling legal drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/juror-2-review\">Juror #2<\/a>,\u201d which turned the pristine image of the American nuclear family upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"(L to r) NICHOLAS HOULT as Justin Kemp, LESLIE BIBB as Denice, ADRIENNE C. Pictures release.\" class=\"wp-image-1315 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/rev-1-JR2-06412r_1_High_Res_JPEG-1024x683.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201c<em>Juror #2\u201d Credit: Claire Folger<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>North America wasn\u2019t the only location for twilight-year filmmakers: 91-year-old Greek-French virtuoso <strong>Costa-Gavras<\/strong> released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt32365122\/\">Last Breath<\/a>,\u201d a dialogue on death between a philosopher and doctor specializing in palliative care, while at 88, British kitchen-sink realist <strong>Ken Loach <\/strong>released a film about the Middle Eastern refugee crisis, with the smalltown English drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/articles\/ken-loach-forever\/\">The Old Oak<\/a>,\u201d which he has cited as possibly his final film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year looks to continue the trend of seasoned filmmakers releasing new work. At 81, American visual poet <strong>Terrence Malick<\/strong> is finally set to release \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/exclusive-terrence-malicks-three-hour-biblical-epic-the-way-of-the-wind-aims-for-2025-premiere-as-first-story-details-arrive\/\">The Way of the Wind<\/a>,\u201d his long-in-the-works Jesus Christ biopic. <strong>Mike Leigh<\/strong> (who\u2019s 82) has just released \u201cHard Truths,\u201d which sees him re-team with his \u201cSecrets & Lies\u201d star Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who delivers a blistering dramatic performance. 82-year-old German maestro <strong>Werner Herzog<\/strong> is all set for his first animated feature, \u201cThe Twilight World,\u201d about a Japanese soldier who spent 30 years in hiding, believing that World War II was still ongoing (he also produced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/10\/books\/review\/twilight-world-werner-herzog-hiroo-onoda.html\"> a book<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schauspiel.koeln\/spielplan\/a-z\/das-daemmern-der-welt\/\"> a play<\/a> on the subject).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous great filmmakers aged 75 and up have projects in the works, including <strong>Claire Denis<\/strong> (78), <strong>James L. Brooks<\/strong> (84), and <strong>Agnieszka Holland<\/strong> (76)\u2014and even Shrader appears to have written<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/08\/paul-schrader-announces-the-basics-of-philosophy-updates-non-compos-mentis-1236049911\/\"> two more<\/a>. This trend is enough to make the prospect of more \u201cold-man filmmakers\u201d (and \u201cold-woman filmmakers\u201d) all the more exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/top-advice-from-this-years-buzziest-filmmakers\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Top Advice From This Year\u2019s Buzziest Filmmakers<\/mark><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unconventional biopics + documentaries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Musician biopics and documentaries are a tried and true format\u2014so much so that they were parodied to perfection by Jake Jasdan in 2007\u2019s \u201cWalk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.\u201d Any work that falls into the genre\u2019s familiar conventions, or follow its birth-success-addiction-redemption plotline is often compared unfavorably to the spoof (films like 2018\u2019s \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d follow its formula to a tee), but 2024 saw a handful of filmic biographies break the mold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the biopic front, \u201c<strong>Better Man<\/strong>\u201d transformed U.K. pop star Robbie Williams into a singing, dancing ape as a metaphor for how he felt in the spotlight; Pablo Larra\u00edn rounded out his trilogy of famous women (after \u201cJackie\u201d and \u201cSpencer\u201d) with \u201c<strong>Maria<\/strong>,\u201d an exploration of the life of opera legend Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) through a series of haunting memories. \u201cWalk the Line\u201d director James Mangold returned to the format to capture Bob Dylan, as played by Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, with \u201c<strong>A Complete Unknown<\/strong>,\u201d and focused the story around one specific, controversial event:<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3968092\/bob-dylan-electric-newport\/\"> the night Dylan went electric<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"429\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Jonno Davies as \u201cRobbie Williams&quot; in Better Man from Paramount Pictures\" class=\"wp-image-1316 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/BM_FF_1363-1024x429.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jonno Davies as \u201cRobbie Williams\u201d in \u201cBetter Man\u201d from Paramount Pictures.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year\u2019s music documentaries pushed the envelope too, eschewing traditional structures (the standard, sit-down interviews interspersed with archival footage concert footage), and captured their subjects\u2019 music with cinematic aesthetics. The upbeat, imaginative talents of rapper-producer Pharrell Williams took dazzling LEGO form in the Morgan Neville-directed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/piece-by-piece-pharrell-lego-documentary-review\"><strong>Piece by Piece<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d while Gary Hustwit\u2019s documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/eno-review-ai-sundance-documentary-1234946184\/\"><strong>Eno<\/strong><\/a>\u201d\u2014about experimental producer Brian Eno\u2014takes on a choose-your-own-adventure format. Of course, neither of these conversations would be complete without Alex Ross Perry\u2019s hybrid movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/pavements-review\"><strong>Pavements<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d which captures the \u201990s slacker rock group Pavement and its particular brand of detachment by taking an almost prank-ish approach to <em>both<\/em> the musician documentary and the biopic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like 2024, which saw the release of the politically sanitized \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/bob-marley-one-love-review\">Bob Marley: One Love<\/a>,\u201d 2025 will no doubt see a number of bog-standard musical films. However, a handful of them seem poised to further break the mold. While a <em>second<\/em> Pharrell Williams project, Michel Gondry\u2019s 1970s coming-of-age musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/pharrell-and-michel-gondrys-golden-is-a-celebration-of-black-joy\/\"><strong>Golden<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/pharrell-movie-shut-down-michel-gondry-golden-1236300426\/\">shelved<\/a> after being shot, Jeremy Allen White is set to star as Bruce Springsteen in Scott Cooper\u2019s \u201c<strong>Deliver Me From Nowhere<\/strong>,\u201d which will focus on the making of one album rather than chronicling the Boss\u2019 entire life. Richard Linklater also recently debuted \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/blue-moon-review-ethan-hawke-richard-linklater\"><strong>Blue Moon<\/strong><\/a>\u201d at Berlin, an even more granular biopic about Broadway songwriter Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) set over a single night. On the documentary front, Bernard MacMahon\u2019s part-archival \u201c<strong>Becoming Led Zeppelin<\/strong>\u201d is perhaps the form\u2019s most thrilling prospect. The premiere of its work-in-progress cut at Venice last year was met with rapturous applause, and was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/becoming-led-zeppelin-review-venice-film-festival\/\"> said to contain<\/a> the same kind of potency and excess as the English rock band\u2019s early work\u2014the kind of artistic meld of subject and form that, ideally, all musician docs and biopics aim
