Experiencing Interruptions?

Serpentine: chronicles from the Underworld

This short film was shot in Latin America, within the frame of the Rroots Project, an artistic investigation around the theme 'invisible', in which the collaboration with the local community and the exploration of the chosen concept trough different medias and approaches were at the core of the creative process.

In amazonian traditional medicine, the shaman leads a journey through a plane of reality which becomes seeable by inducing a state of altered consciousness. During the journey, powerful insights can arise, on both the origin of the issue and possible ways to solve it. The process of unblocking those deep-stored information can lead one to be confronted with its own deepest fears.
As we were preparing to explore our inner realms, we shot this clip, before jumping into the unknown.

"In order to rise, one has to fall.
The higher you want to fly, the deeper you may have to dig,
embracing the dirt, becoming it,
get to know your roots and grow solid wings,
to fly away from me".

Director Biography - Alex Zampini

Grown up in Bolzano, Italy (1986) he moved to Verona to graduate at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he could deepen his interest for photography and video art and start shaping his own language under the guidance of the photographer Mauro Fiorese and the contemporary guitarist Michele Parigino.

In 2010 he moved to Berlin, where he discovered contemporary dance and instant composition and became involved in it as musician.
Meeting Katie Duck opened new perspectives to his performative approach and inspired Alex to further explore the relationship between sound and dance within the field of improvisation and performance art.
On the other hand, his interest towards visual art, led him to develop himself as filmmaker, to run his own projects and to collaborate with a number of artists from the local and international scene.
Alex currently works and lives in Berlin.

Director Statement

I’m a berlin-based freelance artist, and I create films and music on my own or in collaboration with other human beings from different social and cultural ecosystems.
My focus lies on improvisation, especially on the relationship between body, sound and image and as both filmmaker and musician I collaborate with dancers, performance artists, healers and teachers around the world.
I consider art a powerful self-knowledge tool, where I can question aspects of reality and get into a process. My projects are indeed long term process-oriented experiences.
As a filmmaker, I don’t steal an image, nor I compose it. I rather resolve it according to my perceptions and share it with others a perspective, another potential truth. When I’m shooting a dancing body I see myself as part of a duet.
