Private Project

A Hero's Words

In 1942, African Americans were allowed to enlist in the Marines. Mr. Henry "Hank" F. Jackson, a resident of Las Vegas, was one of the first African Americans to join the Montford Point Marines in 1943. They trained at a converted garbage dump and built their own barracks in preparation for training and war. They fought the Japanese. Mr. Jackson received several medals for bravery, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, which President Obama authorized.
