Director Biography - Daniel de Lacerda e Drummond

Daniel de Lacerda e Drummond is an award-winning Brazilian writer and director with a background in visual effects.

His first animated film, “Chiaroscuro,” served as his senior thesis and won a Student Academy Award in 2015, qualifying for the 88th Oscars and screening in international festivals such as Annecy and Anima Mundi.

With a burning desire to tell stories that spoke to difficult social and political themes, he transitioned to live-action and embraced a raw, verité style. His live-action debut, “A Foreman,” earned him a second nomination at the Student Academy Awards and played numerous festivals, winning a Special Mention at the historic Guadalajara International Film Festival, and the Panavision Future Filmmaker Award.

In 2018, Daniel’s screenplay for “Salvage” was selected for the 68th Berlinale shorts lab. The film will have its World Premiere in competition at the Cinequest Film Festival in March 2020.

He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he is developing his first feature. He looks forward to continuing to tell stories of social immediacy through compelling, exciting narratives.

Director Statement

Growing up in one of Brazil's poorest states, I witnessed first-hand the challenges and hurdles of blue-collar life. I grew to see the world of businesses struggling to stay afloat. Of managers weighting the well-being of their employees against that of their businesses.

My growth as a filmmakers happened concurrently with my growth as a person, and the painful moral dilemmas that were happening around me unavoidably made their way into the worldview I was nurturing. And I grew particularly in awe of the dignity and resilience with which each of these workers tackled the difficulties life hurled at them. I saw a lot of beauty and humanity in ugly places, and those images never left me.

Those workers were not deciding the fate of the world. But they were very often deciding the fate of *their* world. And they deserve to have their stories told with honesty and sincerity.

“A Foreman” is a film to those people.
