Zeldovich: Theories of Combustion and Detonation
The Seconde World War had not yet ended, and the beginnings of a new confrontation had already appeared. In September 1942, the Secret Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences was created. There, new battles began, only they were fought not on the battlefields, but in laboratories, and instead of soldiers with weapons in their hands, scientists with logarithms entered the front line. After the success of the Americans, enormous resources were devoted to creating their own nuclear bomb. Soviet power was ready to do a lot to achieve the goal.
One of the scientists who worked on deadly weapons was Yakov Zeldovich, far from being an exemplary citizen. He had connections with abroad, he was married to the sister of the enemy of the people, was accused of trying to publish classified materials, and this is not a complete list. But this turned a blind eye. Upstairs understood that there are no irreplaceable people. Much depended on him: whether it will be possible to achieve nuclear parity and preserve even a fragile, but peace.
