The residents of the stone city make their living by trading stone. They hollow out the mountainsides, shattering every massive rock in the city into gravel and sand for profit, a practice sustained for centuries.
Los was the first to witness the flaming tail. Following his breath, he kept his pulse steady at sea level. Before him loomed an enormous stone, suspended mid-air like a mountain, churning and roaring with a deep rumble that disturbed the sea into circular ripples.
He woke up on the damp ground, surrounded by blinding white light and the coarse sound of woolen fabric rustling. The people boarding the ship slowly rose. A shadow blocked his vision—sharp and distinct, like a needle piercing countless grooves on a record. A figure in black stood against the white, rotating at 33 revolutions per minute.
The black-clad figure led the crowd toward the brightness. Los stared at him, noticing threads growing from his body and horns sprouting from his head. This reminded Los of his dream.
Startled awake, Los's clear white eyes gradually filled with murky water, until the gray of his pupils spilled outward.
