Director Biography - Martin Mur

From an early age, Martin is drawn to filmmaking and experiments with the moving image and new forms of audiovisual representation.

In ‘Retallades’ (2013), he denounces the economic cuts imposed by the government in the Spanish financial crisis. Prize for ‘Political Screen’ of the exhibition ‘Pantalla Global’ (2013, CCCB).

As a university graduation project, he makes ‘True Eyes’ (2014), a sci-fi short film that addresses the ethical issues of transhumanism and questions the use of biotechnology on the human body.

In 2017 he moves to Zurich, to work as a curator at the art gallery Kulturfolger. In 2018 he pursues a Master of Fine Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), where he researches non-linear narratives and how time is expressed in film.

‘Take your time’ (2018) is an interactive installation. A huge colored disk, an allusion to the sun, ascends and descends on the horizon depending on the viewer’s move- ment and location.

‘Memoria Luz’ (2019), is an experimental piece that explores the idea of the passage of historical time. A hand appears in three spaces that symbolize the emancipation of human development; next to cave paintings, in a study of aerodynamics and in the digital age.

Martin finishes his master’s degree with an honorary distinction for his work on ‘Still Façade of a Hostel’ (2021), an audiovisual installation that tells the same story from the point of view of each of its three characters. Narrative comprehension depends on the viewer’s location relative to the three installation screens.

‘Yvo’ (2022), is a portrait of his grandfather -a complex and contradictory character- which explores the deconstruc- tion of stories and the limits between fiction and documentary as an intimate and familiar experience.

‘Tomorrow’ (2022) is a fiction short film made in Lanzarote, during Werner Herzog’s film workshop. It narrates the arrival of a refugee family to a deserted and polluted island, where there seems to be no prognosis of a future.

Director Statement

YVO is my most personal film. I invited all my family members to participate in the experience of closely living with - and filming - a decaying man. I was drawn by the desire to homage my grandfather, who left us all with a transcendent view on life and never really overcame his mournings.
