Director Biography - Seongkwon Moon

Seongkwon Moon, 35, was a mentee of Hungarian director Bela Tarr and a student of his Film.factory academy in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 2013 to 2015. In 2014, Seongkwon won Special Mention Award for his feature film project and received a Project Development Fund at Tokyo Filmex International Film Festival.

Seongkwon was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1986, and lived in the region for twelve years. He had spent adolescence in Pennsylvania, the United States. Seongkwon majored in sociology at Yonsei University, South Korea. During two-year obligatory military service, Seongkwon volunteered to serve in Iraq for six months as a translator. After the military service, he returned to college in 2009 and established 'Dreamers Production', a filmmaking organization in which he practiced as a president for a year. Due to the diverse experience abroad, Seongkwon's main interests are racism and cultural clash.

He is currently working as a freelance video journalist with international media such as BBC, Bloomberg, and CNN. Yuna is his second film.

Director Statement

South Korea's legendary skater in short track speed skating changed his nationality to Russia after he could not bear the threats and pressure from those who wanted to put the athletes under their control. More than a decade had passed, but factionalism is interfused in Korea's sports so deeply that such custom has still not changed.
