Director Biography - Hubert Davis

Hubert Davis has built a strong reputation in Canada's documentary film scene as one of the most acclaimed contemporary Directors of the genre. Davis' directorial debut Hardwood was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Documentary (Short Subject) in 2005 and was nominated for an Emmy® in 2006. Davis' next project, the short film Aruba had its world premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, and won the Grand Jury Award at the Palm Springs International Festival. Hubert's feature documentary film Giants of Africa premiered at the TIFF 2016 and followed Toronto Raptors GM Masai Ujiri and his mission to bring hope to youth basketball in Africa. Hubert’s latest documentary about racism in hockey Black Ice was chosen as a gala premiere at TIFF 2022 and won the People's Choice Award at the festival.

Davis began directing commercials with Untitled Films in 2005 and has worked with clients such as Coca Cola, Nike, Volkswagen, Pfizer, Audi, Ford, Chevrolet, His Film Once More – The Story of VIN 903847 project for Volkswagen Canada was a recipient of two Lions in Cannes in 2014 and featured in the Communication Arts Annual. HP’s Rivolta was the recipient of a Bronze Film Lion in 2017. Hubert’s film June’s for Casey House was ranked on WARC creative 100 as one of the winningest campaigns in 2018. In 2019, The launch of the Boys Don’t Cry film for White Ribbon which was featured in AdAge, Shots, Fast Company, and Creative Review and took home multiple awards at Cannes, ADCC and the One Show. The White Ribbon follow-up film Day After Day won 3 D&AD pencils and another Cannes Lion in 2022. Hubert was featured as one of the top 100 Visionary directors in the world on the 2022 ADWEEK Creative 100 list.
