Director Statement

When I was younger, I was very aware of my inscrutability. Moving through Los Angles, new friends and collaborators, you must become everyone’s friend. You must have edgy but not offensive opinions. You are constantly riding a line of pleasantness. It’s exhausting. After some time, I started thinking about Patrick and how my life would be different if I never ventured out, if I never left home or my friends or my parents. That sounded very cozy sometimes but there was a dangerous idea of an extended adolescence that I found fascinating. A boy moving around in a man’s body. Somebody so desperately trying to cling on to the familiar that he has no other option than to become violent when it’s threatened. The enigma of Patrick is what I loved and what I wanted to explore. I spent a long time in his head and there is nothing more horrifying than somebody unaware of their own intentions.
