When you ask the question “who is James Jones,:” in-person it usually comes with a long winded story describing all major events that took place in my life so far, but in short, I am someone who loves to create and perform. For as long as I could remember I've always loved to express myself in any shape or form I could. Due to that I've always had an appreciation for the art of expression, however that may come. I've always surrounded myself with creatives and explored as many facets of self expression as I could. Whether it was playing instruments, dancing, acting or singing I’ve always found the most joy in studying a craft and seeing just how far I can go with it. In doing so, I've discovered that all these different skills and disciplines aren’t so different from each other, and the common through line is performing. No matter what you are doing; singing a song, displaying your art, or acting on a stage; you are putting all of your skills and talents on display for others to observe. And that can be the scariest and most thrilling thing anyone can ever do in their life. Because to perform is to share your artistry with the world, and there’s nothing else that I would ever want to do with my life. So James Jones is someone who’s only ever dreamed of creating and sharing his art with the world in any way he could possibly imagine to do so.
YOU AND ME is more than just a story about two brothers. It’s a glimpse into the minds of everyone; how we all process, heal, and grow as individuals. It's a film about perspectives. More often than not, we go through life creating genuine connections with other people while also developing a skewed expectation along side it. As much as you have a “we” or “us” mentality with other people they are exactly that, other people, with their own lives and separate journeys that may coincide with your own but shouldn’t be expected to.
This film is about learning the balance between loving another person and respecting their individuality from you, while exploring more of your own individuality from others.
This has been a vital and important lesson for me to learn living independently away from home and loved ones, and for me to grow creatively as an actor/filmmaker. For a large part of my life I've never fully understood the separation between me and those I loved. But as my journey in life progressed, I've learned that as much as I feel that someone is integral to my life, they’re not. We’re living two completely different lives with different perspectives. We can share the same experiences but we’ll always have different stories, because we were never meant to be a “we” it’s always just been YOU AND ME.
