Joe & Tim have been best friends since that time in Year 9 when Mr Downie did a rap about Trigonometry. Now they’re writers, directors and professionally tired dads.
They have made award-winning short films starring Martin Freeman (The Office, Sherlock, Fargo), Julian Barratt (Flowers, The Mighty Boosh) and Sean Lock (8 Out of 10 Cats) - screening internationally at Festival de Cannes, LA Shorts Fest, Austin Film Festival and Raindance, amongst others.
They are currently working on the development of a You From The Future feature film (this is a “proof of concept” don’t you know) and have just completes a web series pilot/proof of concept for comedians Holly Burn and David Mills.
Most of us wish we could go back in time and tell our younger selves something. Maybe it’s something profound like “live once and live well” or maybe it’s something as simple as “don’t tell your guitar teacher that you wrote a song that’s actually by The Prodigy; he obviously knows that it’s by The Prodigy because you can barely play a four chord Oasis song”.
That was the basic inspiration and premise behind You From The Future, but as we developed the script, we quickly realised that filling it with time-travel related gags wasn’t enough. With the guidance of the BFI and Film London team, as well as our brilliant script editor Andrew Ellard, we began to explore Daniel and Mary’s relationship in more detail. We wanted the audience to identify with them. To feel their various frustrations as both a couple and as individuals We want the viewers to spend some time in their world and it feel, in at least some way, relatable.
We were also conscious that the future versions of Daniel and Mary needed to learn a lesson; that having (what you think are) the answers isn’t necessarily the long term solution. It’s not always about searching for the answers to happiness, because as John Lennon said, “life is what happens when you’re making other plans”.
Ultimately, the film is about finding a healthy balance and accepting yourself for who you are. We’re all guilty of not always trying our hardest, but sometimes it’s just nice to eat pizza and watch a box set… and we shouldn’t feel bad about that.
