Ten self-portraits structure the film which are presented as follows in the opening credits : Name / Parallel Identity.

We begin with Christina Cha, coming to terms with the murder of her beloved artist aunt. Other stories include a monk building a robotic deity and a doctor who embodies Charlie Chaplin in order to heal his patients through laughter. Director Statement

You Are My Audience came together over the course of three years. The way we construct identities has been a core subject in my life and my work. Initially, I was working on separate documentaries featuring people assuming alternate identities, but gradually the stories revealed themselves to be interconnected in unexpected and meaningful ways. Ultimately, I merged these elements into a single film of echoing narratives.

The first story I began filming is a very personal one. My dear friend, the outsider artist Jason Brinkerhoff, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and invited me to document his experience. We met regularly during the final two years of his life as he fought to continue making art. A central project involved sifting through four million found photographs to locate "lost" images of himself in a variety of faces and genders.

The other stories in the film weave in and out as they take us around the world from the U.S. to India, Japan, and Switzerland. They include a niece taking on the identity of her beloved deceased aunt - artist Theresa Cha, a monk who has constructed a robotic god, and a doctor who becomes Charlie Chaplin in order to heal patients with laughter.
