Director Biography - Thandokazi Msumsa

I grew up in a household run by woman and they had this beautiful culture of when they were all together mostly in the kitchen they would tell stories, be it village/township gossip but they would dramatise it and told it in thee most animated and dramatic manner.
I enjoyed and loved seeing this.
Fast forward to years later my mom worked with a lot of NGOs for woman rights and there was one organisation who’s slogan stayed with me all these years ‘Her voice, her peace, she matters”
During my teen years with a strict mother my escape was drama classes at the Baxter theatre where my acting career began, and watching television sitcoms. It was acting that grew the seed of storytelling. A beautiful love affair began, a love that over the years has deepened and inspired me to not only see myself as an actress but as a storyteller. This realisation paved the way for me to see myself in a different light in storytelling- as a director.
With the sitcoms, I loved the simplicity and values that came with them. Then I got introduced into documentaries, they used to play every Monday night on SABC 1 and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. These project and these years are where I learned the process side of the business - and how to accomplish the creative inside of a complex structure. Take the simplicity and values from the sitcoms and find a way to incorporate the educational and real element of documentaries so that I can share that voice, that little girls voice from ‘Her voice, her peace, she matters’

This whole concept in my head keeps on evolving. Nowadays there is a lot of talk about Black Girl Magic which I’m definitely for and love, but then again the gap between them (girls) and the boys continue which made me want to go with Black Child Magic. Focusing on both boys and girls. I look at your story and I see bridging that gap, with a love story.
This opportunity is truly an eye open and one that will allow me to apply my directing philosophy and also leave my footprint on our community. That footprint is a story, open to picture creativity, driven by humanity, love struggle, the ordinary person, and the community. The message is “MY VOICE, MY PEACE, I MATTER”
