Director Statement

Yippie was never really my intention. It was super random coming up with it a day before the deadline of submitting a thesis concept and storyline. My friend, Enzo Angeles, is my co-writer and my boyfriend, Tony, and I were brainstorming in a small soundproof room. Our original idea was a man in is mid-50’s who’s retired and has no idea what to do with the rest of his life, so he befriends a bunch of young stoners and trips his ass off. Then weeks moved forward and I thought about the story a lot. Javi Villareal was a close friend of ours and he passed away before completing his thesis, which he pitched to me before, and I wanted to commemorate his work. So I dragged some parts of his capstone into my script, worked on it with Enzo, and eventually it developed into this coming- of-age, dramedy of a 45 year old woman.
