Yesterday’s Fine is a film about the unshakable melancholy that plagues everyday life. It examines the detrimental effects of substance abuse and how it leads to the destruction of a friendship. The story centers around a teenage girl, Shannon, who is fighting an addiction to prescription meds. The conflict overshadows Shannon's passion and talent for music whilst ruining her fragile friendship with Carina, her well meaning and supportive best friend. Through the film’s long takes and monotone black and white style, I wanted the audience to go through the motions with Shannon or in other words, to live with this character by seeing her day to day struggle under an honest lens. Nonetheless, the film is hopeful. It shows that hope can be found in face of an uncertain future and that a life once broken can be repaired.
