Yakasi’s Daughter
14-year-old school dropout Jariyum and her 17-year fiancé Migam live a traditional life with their families in a remote, nondescript riverine island somewhere in Upper Assam where only certainty is uncertainty thanks to perennial natural calamities. Members of the Mising Community, the oldest plain tribe in Assam, their day-to-day existence often turns out to be a formidable challenge amidst extreme poverty and extremely poor infrastructure. Visible community degeneration further compounds the cumulative scenario in the terrain where the State ironically exists only in elections, yet there they fend for themselves, live their dreams and aspirations battling all that impasse. Thus, Jariyum’s biggest dream is to slip into a conjugal life better and more bearable than her mother Yakasi’s. Will her dream come true once she elopes and settles with her fiancé? Or, will she have to embrace and reconcile to her mother Yakasi’s pathetic life of domestic drudgery?
