Director Biography - Grace Ward

Grace Ward has been a storyteller since a young age while running around the woods of Virginia and wrangling her large amount of siblings into play acting the stories in her head.
Her parents joined a non - profit at the age of 10 and she spent several summers traveling in a big 15 passenger van across the US. At 18 she moved to Papua New Guinea and worked in Media and Marketing for four years there. She also has lived in Australia and in the Philippines for months at a time.
Whether it be backpacking in the Sawtooths of Idaho, sleeping in one room with eight other people in the slums of Manila, or living in her current tiny apartment in New York, Grace's experiences have shaped her ability to mold and assimilate into almost any situation. Her rich life experiences have given her so much to tell, at such a young age. Her drive and hardworking nature has landed her a scholarship from Taco Bell and she is currently studying at New York Film Academy in NYC producing her thesis film ‘Promised Daughters’ about growing up homeschooled in the Quiverfull culture.

Director Statement

YOUR OWN is born out of my experience with PTSD and the effects unprocessed trauma causes. It showcases truly how powerful our brain can be to create our own realities. This film is an exploration of the circular pattern my brain has so often put me through as I’ve dealt with stress and trauma.
Through my own research and talking with licensed counselors and therapists, the idea for this film was born.
The method of EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy used most often with military personnel with PTSD, was discovered by a therapist while she was hiking along the trail. His eyes moving back and forth to study her path stimulated her brain and processed the stress she was dealing with.
Katie’s, our main character, frontal cortex has shut down (the rationale, logical part of her brain) and she is now operating out of her fight or flight zone like many do who have experienced trauma that is unprocessed. She starts projecting her fears of being left alone on everything around her. In a circular pattern, like what happens in our brains during traumatic events, she digs herself deeper and deeper unable to break through her fears.
Now we put her in the otherworldly landscape of Southern Idaho and it all becomes a perfect storm.
