Weaving between memories, internal monologues and life changing moments of self-realization, Elle Brooks-Tao places emphasis on overlooked or underestimated characters and creates stories that reveal deep conflict with determined bravado. Her recent narrative work fighting against modern day slavery for non-profit A21 has been recognized for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Film in over 20 international festivals to date. Her branded work has earned a silver Kindle shark and has been recognized by 1.4, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Cannes Lions, and the AICP awards. She recently debuted her feature film, I’m Not Crazy I’m Sick, with her second in development.
I was thrilled to work on a film with Moncrieff where young men are allowed to be vulnerable onscreen about their mental health. From the beginning, we wanted to give an example of what it looks like to choose to live when desiring the opposite. One man dies a minute in the world to suicide, statistically. We want to create a message that encourages men to share their feelings, and turn to each other for companionship. This was a humble project made by 9 core crew members, myself and our producer Roisín Moloney, Moncrieff, and with half the town of Tramore, Ireland donating their time, space, cars, and copious amounts of Guinness. Everyone in our cast and crew had lost a close friend, family, or acquaintance to suicide. It’s a prevailing problem and we collectively wanted to show an ending that represented an alternate choice: opening up.
