Director Statement

After witnessing the displacement of civilians due to the “Palestinian-Israeli conflict” and the “Russian-Ukrainian war,” I began to consider the relationship between humans and war. With the continuous advancement of technology, the weapons in human hands have become increasingly powerful. I wondered if humanity would survive if a third world war broke out and how to avoid war. With these questions, I wrote and directed “Smoke.” In the film, I used a 4:3 aspect ratio because I believed it would focus the audience’s visual attention more on the characters rather than the environment. In the film, I only presented the viewpoints and left the thinking to the audience, as I cannot provide an answer to the age-old question of “how to stop war,” which has puzzled humanity for thousands of years. I hope there will be no more wars and no more displaced children, and I wish for world peace.
