Wuxing
a collaborative covid lockdown collaged audio/visual project.
just before the United States began to shut down (this was still 2 weeks before Covid 19 was officially announced a nationwide pandemic) I remember feeling completely helpless, uncertain about what was going on/going to happen. The exact timeline looking back is all a blur at this point. Things spun to historically unfamiliar place's faster than we were able process...
Audiovisual art was a way to have a conversation.
China was facing extreme backlash at the time. I wanted to highlight parts of their culture that resonated with me. In traditional Chinese medicine theory there are 5 elements; water, fire, metal, earth and wood. I reached out to 5 artists and asked them to compose a 1 minute song with a specific element in mind. Simultaneously I filmed and edited 5 one minute videos. They are all fairly abstract, although touching on some key points. (The emotion associated with metal for example is grief) This project was a way I could still connect with my peers from a distance.
