I'm an award-winning writer and director that is passionate about telling real and raw stories about the good, the bad, and everything in between of the human experience.
As a storyteller, I'm passionate about highlighting underrepresented communities and prioritizing diversity with the stories I write and bring to life. I’m a first generation Honduran-American and was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Growing up, I was always hyper aware of the lack of on screen characters I could relate to in some way; they didn’t have dark skin like I did, or curly hair that was practically impossible to manage. Their families didn’t have crazy loud personalities and only ever spoke English. At the age of five, I would sneak off with my parents camera late at night. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the art storytelling ran through my blood. The second I realized I could be in control of the stories that were told, I wanted to flip the narrative.
I know I was born to be a storyteller and hope with every piece I create I can leave viewers feeling seen, heard, and represented.
“Working From Home” was inspired by my upbringing in the US while being raised in a Latin household. There was a sense of pressure that came with being a first generation Latin-American and making sure that who I turned out to be wasn’t a disappointment to the American dream my parents fought so hard to get. I can still remember the fear in my mom's eyes when 13-year-old me said “Mami, I want to be a movie director when I grow up.” Will the family back in Honduras judge my parents for coming to the US only for their daughter to not become a lawyer or a doctor? I felt called to explore this dilemma even deeper - and then Anita’s story came to fruition. I wanted to explore a fresh, comedic route of storytelling to shed light on the topics that we can all relate to beneath the surface. From feeling the need to live up to people's expectations, to judging our worth by our job title and salary, and exploring how culture plays a role.
With this project, I aim to create a world of characters and personalities that encourages viewers to embrace all parts of themselves. I knew I was the right fit to tell this story because, as a first generation Latin-American, I know what it is like to feel the need to hide a part of who I am in order to fit in with others. But, I also know how freeing it feels to realize that where I come from is a part of my identity and how good it feels to be loud and proud about what makes me, me.
