Ben Bernard is a Los Angeles based director and producer. He is originally from Connecticut and graduated from Emerson College with a BFA in film and a minor in business studies.
I grew up in a rural New England town, in a very liberal state, in a generally progressive part of the US. Many people who grew up in this kind of environment had a very interesting relationship with race. My town was majority white, and most of my friends were left leaning and in many cases active in social justice causes. Despite all of this we shared numerous and very clear blindspots in our understanding of the world. Tom and Miles are not meant to be representatives of every multiracial friendship or relationship in this country: they have a very specific connection and dynamic that is unique to the people they are, what age and generation they are, and the town/world they grew up in. When we don’t face questions and instances of bigotry in the communities we are a part of, and don’t think internally and evaluate our shortcomings, then all we are doing is pushing the can down the road. Societies don’t change without people changing, and people don’t change without understanding they have to change in the first place.
