Jeff Winch is an independent artist who produces films, videos, photography and installations. His work explores a diverse range of interests and approaches. Dogs, underdogs, silent film, faded photographs and most recently, a curious wood engraver, all populate his idiosyncratic body of work. He has exhibited internationally at festivals and galleries, and his films and videos have been televised in Europe and North America.
Equally adept with antiquated technology and digital tools, George Walker is proof that the old and new can co-exist and create works of charm and substance. His love of the old world, and his fascination for Canadian icons like Tom Thomson and Leonard Cohen, infuses his work and his character, and gives him the aura of someone from another era.
Lively, playful, and intelligent, with his signature hat and round glasses, George is an energetic and engaging man. His achievements are impressive -- 15 books and numerous awards -- but what intrigues me most is the constant flurry of ideas that flows from him and informs his work.
He loves books and talks with authority about the book as humanity’s best archive and its ability to allow us to travel through time. Like George, I also share an appreciation for worlds that harken back to Dickens and the flickering light of gas lamps. This is not simply nostalgia; it sits at the foundation of everything I produce. George uses old relief printing technology combined with mechanical and digital tools. I use a camera which is a Victorian invention. Together we visit his latest inspiration and my new passion, Mary Pickford.
