Director Biography - Jocelyn Cate

Jocelyn Cate was seven years old when she wrote her first script for television. It might have been in fancy, large fonts and only ten pages, but it was a script for an original show nonetheless. She began her career in writing as a software developer before switching “profession tabs” to focus on her first, creative writing passion: young-adult fiction. The Wonderkin series was inspired by her upbringing in Virginia. She has written (14) episodes, (1) 400 pg novel, and released (1) 46-pg novelette for the series! As a first-time filmmaker, the Wonderkin pilot is her directorial debut at 23 years old.

Her art is driven by the following goals:
- To uplift the vast, black&brown experience
- To elevate the voices of women + women of color
- To motivate allyship
- To encourage youth activism
- To urge care for our planet

Director Statement

My complicated, tragic, wholesome, lonely, thrilling, tender, romantic, amatory, tenuous life inspired the storylines within the Wonderkin series. It is strongly autobiographical; specifically, taken from diary entries between my 7th-12th grade school years. The drama that drives the character arcs is based on real, painful, beautiful events that happened either, directly to me or to a loved one.

From the beginning, the most important element of this series has been the quality of the characters. With the utmost respect for the complex individuals I’ve encountered + the experiences we’ve shared, Wonderkin was crafted to honor them, provide representation for stigmatized voices, and uplift multi-cultural lifestyles and stories — authentically and fearlessly.

This coming-of-age story is a chronicle of the sexual awakening, rise of power, cultural maturation, and ongoing fight of survival of a bold, teen ensemble. They will face societal and interpersonal issues that plague high schoolers, people of color, the queer community, and females in a relevant hyper-sexual, biased culture.

Oh yeah — I’m a HUGE Sci-Fi / Fantasy fan as well. So, the second most important element of this series is the big world. Consequently, it has been intricately built — never-before-seen rules will astonish our audiences and carry the series through many seasons (+books).

There’s a future here. A future franchise and a clear vision.
