Writer's Introduction to Wolfpack
An introduction to the writer of the new high-stakes TV thriller series with an original cast of characters and unusual locations. A brief outline of how the story emerged from her own first hand experience and why she felt inspired to turn it into a TV thriller script.
The story follows a determined scientist making key discoveries in medicine and food, who suddenly finds herself hunted by both the police and the terrorists working for corporate interests. Past experience convinced the writer that creative solutions are often seen as a greater threat to those desperate to block environmental change than radical protestors.
The series opens when Kat arrives at her lab to check on her almost-completed research, even though she's struggling to deal with the trauma of facing a violent invading mob almost a year ago. Living on the Welsh borders gives the writer a clear perspective on the excess use of pesticides and antibiotics in food production that can and must be changed to systems that are healthy for planet and people.
When ex-lover Luc warns her of another imminent mob invasion, Kat grabs her newest cultures and escapes with him – only to discover that her old boss, Zeph, has been running a parallel 'Wolfpack' project in a secret hub unknown to the authorities. 'Wolfpack' refers to the practice of setting aside competitive urges and training in deep cooperation, a powerful way for teams to succeed in the face of well-funded opposition.
Kat discovers that these raids are an attempt to stop them publishing and to steal their life-saving work for profit.
Luc gets a message that the mob has not only wrecked Kat’s lab again, but the shadowy power-brokers behind the invasion have managed to convince the police that Kat is a terrorist. This may seem extreme, but reflects the kind of thing that's already happening in a number of countries. It needs to be brought into the open, even if in this fictional story, there is a positive and inspiring outcome.
WOLFPACK Season 1
The series follows Kat and Luc's adventures as they go on the run from police and hired thugs, taking refuge in different branches of the Wolfpack network, giving an opportunity to explore all the connected solutions to the climate and environmental crisis.

Jay writes from experiences in wilderness travel and extreme sports; snow peaks in the Andes, big walls in Yosemite, sailing the Irish sea to photograph puffins and dolphins. She has an art degree, post-grad in ecology and later trained with Himalayan shamans. She sings jazz, rides horses… and is still drawn back to the wild places of the Welsh borders.
I worked with an environmental network for several years and encountered the same obstructiveness and plagiarism I describe in Wolfpack – as well as the incredible help and support from friends and allies. I didn’t need to add much fictional hype to turn it into a high-stakes thriller! I also discovered allies in influential positions, only held back by the existing system. I believe that success comes from building alliances across all groups and sectors.
