Joey, a 25-year-old lady heads on a road trip with her girlfriend Erin. They are about to have a wedding on a beach. Strange things happen along the way at the motel, the petrol station, and the car. Things get fuzzier and dreamy, but in the end, they make their way to the beach, hold a wedding, and dance happily on the beach. But turns out it was a dream experiment carried out by the DMT lab.

Director Biography

Qingxin Zheng as known as Chloe Zheng is a filmmaker based in Sydney, Australia. As a graduate of screen and media of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the College of the Arts of University of Sydney, she has interested in architecture, contemporary art, visual art and V.A.J.P. Her body of work currently spans short film, music video, video art installation and creative photography. Chloe is a valued participant in Rookwood HIDDEN Sculptures 2022 internship program.

She’s currently working on her new script for her next short film.

Director Statement

In this short film I planning to make is about a young girl refuses to face the truth that her girlfriend is already gone for good, then she makes herself into a fantasy which I want to delivery a message that living in a dream is also a option for some people just want to give themselves some time and space to recover.
Sigmund Freud believed that dreams have great research value. Through the analysis of dreams, we can learn more about the spiritual world of human beings. For our theme, dream is a fulfillment of a wish. For Joey, our main character’s dream, because the only light of her life leaves her then her stress response is to sink into her own fantasy, and her desire is to live in a world where erin is still there.

Everything in the dream is based on memory, not new. However, these figurative things have been given new meanings by dreams, so we may not be able to clearly analyze the subconscious behind them. So in this short film, Joey sort of imitates erin's character which is completely opposite to her personality.

Cinematically, I want to make it like a 90s road movie which represents young, wild and free.
For this idea, I will use wide shot to show both the nature view and characters in the middle of the frame which leads a relaxed atmosphere. Great contrast and bright colors for a sense of freedom. Because it’s a dream, I will use slow shutter speed to create lights with halo to create a fantasy vision. To create an illusory beauty between light and shadow。
In terms of editing, I will cut between reality and fantasy of Joey’s perceptive to create confusion for the audience. Music can be set to help the pacing and we will find a chill song that as the theme song when they are on the road.
