After obtaining a BA Hons degree in Film and TV, director, producer and editor Alex Lawton founded independent film production company Visual Vybe Productions.
After receiving well documented coverage from the The Sun, FACT Mag and Mix Mag to name but a few, Alex’s debut documentary Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage was released in the Summer of 2013 on iTunes and Google Play. Success after the initial online release of Rewind generated an immediate interest from Television and the media and in November 2013 Rewind was broadcast on The Community Channel (Sky Channel 539) as part of the channels “Brilliant Britain” season. After receiving critical acclaim from UK music press the film went onto be a worldwide success with screenings and promotional events taking place in the US, Sweden, Holland and Ireland. 5 years on from it’s original release Rewind is still in demand, a landmark film which shows no bounds.
Rewind 4Ever gained recognition as a rare in-depth documentary and as it’s popularity and notoriety increased Alex’s next move was to direct and co-produce the short crime drama OUT. Starring Shone Romulus (Top Boy, The Intent), Joerg Stadler (Saving Private Ryan, Hannibal Rising) and featuring an atmospheric score by Sarah Warne (Humans, Channel 4), OUT was premiered at 2015’s British Urban Film Festival at London’s Genesis Cinema.
Alex’s skill and talent as a filmmaker spans across many genres and his latest production is yet another example of his multi-faceted craft. The short film Winter Hill, starring Darcy Vanhinsbergh and Lucy Lowe, is an intimate tale of love, courage and a search for freedom set against a beautiful backdrop of British countryside. The film will feature on the festival circuit throughout 2018 and beyond…
After my previous two projects I really wanted to work on a story that people can genuinely identify with. Winter Hill's charm is in it's simplicity; it's two main characters, for different reasons, are both lost in life but what brings them together is what they've both been searching for; a sense of belonging. Anna offers Daniel a chance of a new life, but Daniel still has to confront his own self-doubts and make a decision on his own.
At some stage in our lives most of us have felt a sense of entrapment and the urge to break free and I think Winter Hill is a captivating reminder that it really is never too late to make a change, to go after your dreams and to do the best we can for as long as we can.
