Director Statement

As a Vietnamese American director, I have always been drawn to the beauty and richness of my Eastern heritage. The film draws inspiration from my mom’s experience with my grandmother’s funeral where the weight of grief and cultural expectations completely suffocated her. Because of the personal nature of the story, I wanted to work with an actor that understood the turmoil of the character and was able to portray their vulnerability. I casted fellow NYU student, Judy Song, as the lead because of her willingness to immerse herself in Vietnamese culture and her connection to the traditional gender roles in the East.

Writing May as a half Korean half Vietnamese character also brought another layer of complexity to the script. By exploring the relationships of multiracial families in Vietnam, I was able to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding. With this story, I hope to create a conversation between the old and young generations about the importance of culture, but also the fluidity that can exist within these traditions.

My film is a tribute to my late grandmother and to all those who have experienced the complicated emotions of loss and grief.
