Although “Where There's Tea There's Hope” marks Lorne Warr's directorial debut as a narrative filmmaker, he's been well ensconced in the creative arts for most of his life. Several of his radio plays were produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company, including the Gabriel Award winning "The Lark Ascending”. As a songwriter, his solo album "Halfway Up the Stairs" received award nominations from both the East Coast Music Association and Music NL in 2014. With his interest in the last few years shifting towards film, he began collaborating on several documentaries, as well as contributing voiceover and musical compositions to a number of local projects. Lorne was pleased when the Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Cooperative (NIFCO) approved him for their First Time Filmmaker’s Program, allowing him to take the helm as director/producer, as the talented cast and crew brought his script to life.
I had been percolating ideas for my first time film as a writer/director for awhile. Within this process I found myself late one night watching a piece on alternate realities that left me with some questions. Are we living in a multiverse, where every possibility exists? Or are we trapped within a hologram created from information stored at the edge of the universe? Some, like Elon Musk, have us living in some sort of virtual reality; an ancestor simulation created by someone in our future. How would we know if any of these things were true? And it was with these thoughts that I went to sleep that night.
In the morning during my tea ritual, I found myself looking for the mug that I just had in hand. It was from there that the thought occurred; what if I had stumbled into my own alternate reality? And could I make a film about it? I found my mug, put the kettle on, and brewed up a strong one because we all know:
