What happened to rug of the Kandıra?

After the declaration of the Republic, factories with different production types and capacities were opened all over the country within the scope of redevelopment policies. The labor force needed in the production processes of these factories brought about migration from villages to cities. In the meantime, the development of the country caused industrialization and even the formation of industrial cities. Kocaeli is one of these industrial cities. In the industrialization process that took place due to its geographical location, the urban culture also changed with the migration it received from all over the country. This population increase, which is the result of modern life, also caused the demographic structure of rural life-urban life to change. Kocaeli rural life is a part of urban culture today and the traditional elements of urban culture are in danger of extinction with the migration that has been made. One of its traditional productions is linen rugs. In addition to sheep's linen yarn was also used in hand-woven rugs. After the flax seed is planted, it is plucked by hand when it grows, then the seed and the stem are separated, the stems are soaked in water (in a stream) and taken out in a mange to be made into yarn, and then these white linen yarns were used in rug weaving. Until 20-25 years ago, sheep were sheared, their wool was turned into balls, and then these balls were dyed with root dyes, and these dyed balls and linen threads were woven on looms. While every woman in the neighborhoods used to know how to weave rugs, today the number of women who know how to weave is very few. With the increase in the number of effortless, fashionable factory-made carpets, which are quite laborious and a process, the production processes of Kandıra hand-woven rugs, which are a part of Kocaeli Urban Culture, have stopped, and rug weaving is not done in the neighborhoods at the moment. The documentary includes the story of the Kandıra Rug from the past to the present, narrated by women weavers, the local culture museum and an art history expert, following the footsteps of traditional Kandıra rug weaving.
