Director Biography - Cynthia Garcia Williams

Williams is a California native born to a mother from Matanzas, Cuba, and a father from Guadalajara Mexico. Three years ago, Cynthia discovered her deep passion for storytelling in the form of screenwriting and ever since, her stories have been written to empower and celebrate the human experience and spirit. Cynthia weaves magic into her stories and characters by using her rich, familial heritage, ancestral faith, and generational resilience.

In 2021 Cynthia made her directorial debut with her award-winning film, “Dukkha,” a film she created a mentee in the Women of Color Filmmakers Directors Lab. Dukkha is based on her journey to sobriety. Six months later Cynthia wrote and directed, another award-winning film, “Bilongo,” an Afro-Cuban Folk story. Throughout 2022 she worked on over a dozen sets and also wrote and directed, “The Bible Thumper and The Bruja,” a comedy that ignites the imagination and reveals the power and the vulnerabilities of humankind. Her most current film, “Legend of El Cucuy” was developed as part of the LALIFF Inclusion Fellowship. Cynthia was also chosen as a mentee with Unlock Her Potential. She is in post-production of her first feature film, a romantic comedy, “We’re Not Married?,” and pre-production of "Sister Margaret", a religious drama feature.

Director Statement

As the director of this film, my primary inspiration stemmed from
the desire to portray people of color in a positive light.
Collaborating with writer/producer Rae Lashea, we were
committed to assembling a diverse team where women, people
of color, and members of the LGBTQ community were the
priority. With trust from Rae, I had the freedom to curate a cast
and crew that aligned with our vision to authentically represent
and honor the diverse characters in our movie. The film delves
into the theme of love and serves as a coming-of-age tale for its
characters, specifically our Puerto Rican lead.
We witness the growth of the couples over ten years as they
experience the transformations that evolve from self-awareness.
Drawing from my background in mental health, the character of
the therapist resonated deeply with me as she provoked
contemplation and conversation on the possibilities of healing
and mental well-being. Crafting distinct endings for the two
couples, as well as exploring the importance of male friendship,
also successfully highlights themes of trust, vulnerability,
communication, and support.
Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, our story becomes
intertwined with the vibrant energy and diversity that defines it.
As an Angeleno, I relished the opportunity to showcase the city's
multifaceted charm and serve as a love letter to the place I call
home. At its core, this film is a celebration of love, diversity, and
personal growth, fueled by a dedicated team passionate about
uplifting underrepresented voices and narratives on screen.
