We’re All Sorry Souls

Frieda, a ski lift operator in Vail, navigates the harsh realities of life in a wealthy mountain town. Caring for her autistic brother Frankie after the sudden death of their mother, Frieda struggles with guilt, loneliness, and financial instability. An encounter with her estranged ex, Sergio, forces her to confront unresolved pain and the weight of her responsibilities. Their reunion stirs up unresolved emotions, as both wrestle with the choices that fractured their bond. Amidst moments of humor, despair, and fleeting connection, the film explores themes of love, resilience, and the fragile ties that bind people together. "We’re All Sorry Souls" portrays the struggles of those living on the margins of privilege, ultimately revealing how even in the bleakest moments, strength and connection can emerge in unexpected ways.

Director Statement

I think in the last three years I have started to learn that “haves” will always wish for more, and “have nots” will too. There seems to be something engrained in our national consciousness, to want. To supersede. To “be the best you can be” — and much effort is put into this practice. We anti-age. We laser, we cut ourselves, we botox — we buy the newest cars, the biggest homes….the nicest stanley cup. Make sure kids go to the best schools. It’s scary actually, how insular all these success story clinics can become not to mention homogenous—How about the rest of us Americans? Everybody just doing day to day? Check to check? Where does all of this fit into our lives? These are all questions my ensemble has been wrestling with all in different ways, and Alessandra’s script spoke very deeply to the small towns we are all from.
