Belgian artist Wendel Berckmans (°1999) performs as filmmaker, animator, actor, musician, composer and sound technician.
Wendel studied applied arts in secondary school and completed an internship at the graphical departments of advertising agency BBDO, Brussels and ERAM university college in Gerona, Spain.
Wendel was enrolled in multiple theater educations from 2006 to 2015 and performed in various plays, among which the City theatre in Leuven, Belgium.
Wendel discovered his passion for music and animation in 2017, after which he set up his musical solo project “Tragic Eyes”. That same year, he started the four-year study programme on Animated films at LUCA school of arts in Brussels.
In 2018, Wendel recorded his first Tragic Eyes album and elaborated an audiovisual project with guest musicians and cultural centre “Het Gasthuis” in Aarschot, Belgium. The project consisted of a nocturnal musical performance in a glass dome above a river, complemented by projections and a light show.
The next year, Wendel completed an animated videoclip for his song “Tragic Eyes”, including stop motion techniques, digital and 3D animation as well as live action. He also started working on his new album.
In 2020, Wendel challenged himself to design an animated film within one week, the 3D animation “Black Square”. In spring, he finished his fantasy movie “The Gate of Memories”, after 2 and a half years of dedicated work. For this project, live action, 3D animation, CGI and 2D digital animation was used. Wendel produced the sound and music for both projects himself. He prefers to employ a wide range of techniques, in order to become a jack of all trades in animation and music.
