Weather Or Not
An egotistical New York author is outwitted by a small-town Uber driver.
Based on a diary entry by David Sedaris, this slice-of-life comedy reflects the superiority "urban élites" feel they have over regular Americans.
Our story follows persnickety author Benjamin as he tries to avoid the banal platitudes he’s dealt by his driver and everyone he meets in town. He’s only interested in ‘real talk’. Thanks to a ploy by his canny driver, Benjamin’s conceded, self-serving search for what he sees as deeper connections ironically leads to his loneliness and ultimate humiliation.

I toured America in a major Broadway musical. We hit small towns, big cities and everything in-between. In each of these places, the locals assured me theirs was the 'real America'.
The one thing that united these disparate takes on what America is, was that every group thought theirs was the definitive America. My intellectual/queer circle in New York were SURE they had it right but so did the myriad of other communities I encountered.
I hope this film speaks a little to the often misplaced self-assuredness so many coastal educated people possess. Our protagonist, a successful young author, presumes he’s the smartest guy in every room, that his enlightenment means he has a special ability to find ‘lessons’ (however self-serving) in every situation. The joke’s on him, though. His inclination that so many of us share these days to try and look at the macro means he is lonely because he’s left not connecting at all. Sometimes, there isn’t a higher message to justify each of life’s travails. Sometimes, you’re just being played like the moron you are.
