Wearing Feathers
In order for us to save the planet, it is imperative that we embody a sense of reverence, protection and love for our kin. Based on the book, Braiding Sweetgrass, by Robin Wall Kimmerer, my film explores how to foster a sense of mutual reciprocity and respect through the lens of science. Science is one way for us to deeply understand “the inscrutable lives of species not our own”, and to intimately form a sense of kinship - the kind of kinship that just might change the world.

A recent graduate of Skidmore College, where she studied integrative biology and completed a thesis on a species of bird native to the region, Alex has a passion for connecting with the natural world through both science and the arts. Photography has long been a passion of hers, and she completed this short film, her first ever documentary film, the spring semester of her senior year. She has travelled to over 20 countries around the world, exploring a myriad of living beings, large and small, since she graduated high school.
This film was a huge, intense, passion project for me - over the course of a 4 month independent study, I shot, edited and produced this narrative essay film. As my first time playing with videography, I surmounted various challenges along the way, but it was a true joy to blend my passions.
