We Exist We Are Human - The Trans Experience
In early February 2023, I decided to interview people in the trans/gender non conforming community. At the time, there was only a few hundred anti-trans bills trying to be passed in the United States, now there are over 430.
My community is often used as a talking point but no one wants to actually sit down and talk with us.
The "We Exist, We Are Human" project's goal was to shine a light and share our experiences in the trans community. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to share and grow as humans, so that we might try to understand each other better.

My name is Nash Franco, my pronouns are he/him and I am a transgender man. After being involved in the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve realized the transgender community lacks a space for our voices to be heard. After hosting Merced’s first trans rights protest, I’ve realized even more the transgender community deserves visibility, respect and love.
March 27, 2023, alongside some like-minded people, I helped form an organization called “Trans Guild of Merced”. We focus on creating visibility, love and compassion for the trans and gender non conforming community. The Trans Guild Of Merced helps put on marches, provide gender affirming clothes, provide community projects, as well as some small film projects.
I wanted to capture the transgender and gender non conforming experience in an authentic light. I reached out to the community as well as online and put together interviews talking about their personal experience.
I was surprised to see how similar some of the answers were. With the trans community often being attacked, seeing our shared experiences in an open light provides the opportunity for sharing, learning and growth.
My heart goes out to everyone I spoke to, you are loved, beautiful and cherished.
