Director Statement

We Are Numb is a film that explores the art of vulnerability and storytelling through symbolism, poetry, music and movement. It highlights the motions of mental isolation Black people experience when we are alone. Day to day, living our lives, there is a silent armour we wear that we are oblivious to. Masked by our own smiles to protect ourselves in a world that portrays us through a dark light. Moments when we are surrounded by community, we can sometimes let go and be free but what about the times when we are alone? What does our vulnerability look like?

When I first learned how to express myself through words, poetry paved the way for me in navigating my mental health. Being African, the arts is not seen as important or something worth pursuing. With many prayers and talks with God and Him being on my journey, I know I’m meant to help people with my art. I hope that Black and African people are inspired by my artwork to no longer suppress what’s held within.
