We Are (At) Home
The film tells the untold stories of Luli, Central Asian Roma people, and shows their resilience and fight for their rightful place in society. Those struggles are demonstrated through a Luli family, that serves as a collective representation of Luli communities spread all across Central Asian regions.

Director’s Biography
Shakhzoda Mirakova
Shakhzoda Mirakova was born and raised in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. She is a journalist and documentary filmmaker dedicated to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities in Uzbekistan. She aims to foster empathy and social change, shedding light on the rich cultural tapestry and pressing issues.
Shakhzoda Mirakova studies at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek, where she filmed her first short documentary The Price of Freedom about journalists of Kyrgyzstan. In 2024 she directed her second documentary We Are (At) Home.
Besides filmmaking, Mirakova advocates for social justice through different platforms and creates projects that are dedicated to study the history of Central Asian Women.

Darya Gusmanova
Darya Gusmanova is an aspiring filmmaker from Kazakhstan. She graduates from American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in 2025, majoring in Cinema and Media Arts. Darya co-directed the film We Are (At) Home, also being a main cinematographer, editor and distributor of the project.
During her 4 years at university Darya produced several documentaries, talking about different social issues of Central Asian communities. Her films focus on people, showing diversity and the differences of the community she lives in. Darya searches the themes of gender representation, mental health and social justice.
